Simple Crocheted Square
STITCHES YOU NEED TO KNOW
Crocheted squares made in rounds are one of the most versatile and beginner-friendly motifs in crochet. Starting from the center and working outward, these squares are built using just three basic stitches:
chain (ch)
double crochet (dc)
slip stitch (ss)
If you’ve mastered those, you're ready to begin!
PROJECT LEVEL
This project is perfect for beginners who want to practice working in the round and keeping their edges even. Once you’ve created a few, you’ll see how easily they can be turned into larger projects—like blankets, pillow covers, bags, scarves, and even wearable garments when seamed together.
SIMPLE MATH OF A SQUARE
Here’s a little crochet math magic: we only need 12 double crochet stitches to begin creating any shape—from circles to triangles to these perfect squares. The real secret is knowing exactly where to insert your corners—that’s what transforms a round into a square.
Since we have four sides in a square, we will divide 12 by 4 sides. This will leave us 3 double crochet stitches for each of the sides. We will insert corners (made out of 3 chains) between each 3 stitches. And that's how we create a square out of 12 dc stitches.
In this tutorial you will aslo learn how to start from a center ring.
