It is always easy to find small, cute “girly” present ideas—princesses, crowns, unicorns, and dolls. But what about those less into ruffles and sparkle? We’ve got them covered, too! This horsey candy cane wrapper is adorable, and the options are endless. Red and white for Christmas, green with your own touches added to create a dinosaur or monster. What would your little guy love?

BEGINNER/EASY LEVEL

Pattern uses American crochet terms. This pattern requires knowing how to make the following stitches: chain, single crochet, half double crochet, and slip stitch.

SIZE

One size, fits a standard candy cane 5.5 in (15 cm) long, 0.4 in (1 cm) thick.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS

  • 5.00 mm/G-US crochet hook or size needed to obtain correct gauge
  • Color A (body) - aran weight yarn (yarn weight size 4). I used Red Heart Classics in yellow color, 3.5 oz (100 g); 190 yds (175 m), 100 % acrylic – 10 yds (9.5 m) per horse
  • Color B (mane) – aran weight yarn (yarn weight size 4). I used Red Heart Super Saver in pumpkin color, 7 oz (198 g), 364 yds (333 m), 100 % acrylic – 10 yds (9.5 m) per horse
  • Standard Size Candy Cain - 5.5 in (15 cm) long, 0.4 in (1 cm) in diameter
  • Mini wiggly eyes 0.2 in (5-6) mm in diameter
  • Tapestry/yarn needle
  • Glue (hot glue or fabric glue)
  • Scissors

Gauge

4 rows x 15 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm) x 4 in (10 cm)

Note about gauge in relation to yarn and hook size: In YouTube tutorial I use yarn size 3 (Simply Soft by Caron). That's because I am a very loose crocheter and for me personally thinner yarn also fits the gauge. However, I used more "normal" tension when I originally designed this pattern to fit it to most crocheters. As long as you can meet the gauge with your hook and yarn, your candy cane will fit.

ABBREVIATIONS

  • Chain (ch)
  • Single crochet (sc): insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops on hook.
  • Half-double crochet (hdc): yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through remaining 3 loops on hook.
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.
  • Stitch (st)
